Towngas supports children with special needs alongside Heep Hong Society with block-building activity
(18 January 2024) Building with blocks not only trains children in hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity but also improves their concentration. It has therapeutic benefits for children with special needs. Furthermore, engaging in block-building activities with children helps enhance their imitation and communication skills. The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) and Heep Hong Society have joined forces to initiate a charity sale of Duddell Street Gas Lamps DIY Miniblocks. They also hosted a workshop to provide one-on-one instruction to children and adolescents with special needs.
The “1+1 Building the Future” miniblock donation campaign is a collaboration between Towngas and Heep Hong Society. Following the “1+1” concept, the campaign paired one volunteer with one SEN student, providing one-on-one instruction in block-building and fostering communication with the students through this activity. During the Christmas and New Year period, the Towngas volunteers, comprising 22 Towngas staff members and Towngas Volunteer Service Team members, organised a block-building workshop at Heep Hong Society’s Wan Tsui Centre. Together with 19 children aged 4-6, they successfully completed the Duddell Street Gas Lamps DIY Miniblocks. Under the guidance of the volunteers, the children focused on utilising their hand-eye coordination, imitating the volunteers, and engaging in communication to accomplish the block-building tasks. As a souvenir, they were allowed to keep their finished creations.
A unique gift
In addition to receiving their personally completed Duddell Street Gas Lamps DIY Miniblocks, the participating children in the event were also treated to a stationery set and snacks prepared by Towngas. These thoughtful gestures aimed to encourage the children to continue their learning efforts in the new year while sharing in the joy of Christmas and New Year.
Ms Elsa Wong Lai-kin, Head of Legal and Company Secretary of Towngas, who attended the event, said, “Nurturing children’s creativity and concentration through block-building is truly meaningful. I truly cherish the time spent with the children.” Ms Chris Heung Pik-ka, Senior Centre Manager of Heep Hong Society’s Wan Tsui Centre, along with a representative from the children, presented Towngas participants with artwork created by the children themselves as the event concluded. Whether it was the blocks or the children's artwork, these items symbolised the precious exchange between the volunteers and the children, making for a truly unique gift in the new year.
Duddell Street Gas Lamps DIY Miniblocks Charity Sale ongoing until March
Towngas’ Duddell Street Gas Lamps DIY Miniblocks Charity Sale is currently taking place, and the public can purchase the miniblock sets at all Towngas Customer Service Centres until March. Priced at $160, all proceeds, after deducting costs, will be fully donated to Heep Hong Society. Furthermore, through the “1+1 Building the Future” miniblock donation campaign, for every set of DIY gas lamp miniblocks purchased by the public, Towngas will donate an equivalent set of blocks to children and teenagers with special needs.
